OFF THE WALL

Martin Magielka:
A Happy Birthday!

Sara Magielka:
If I look at my husband and what he’s doing all day and all night long, that’s fucking off the wall.

Julia Lippmann:
Off the wall – all time favs – rule the world – good old days – wheels of steel – rock with you – bring the noise – check ya head – find your stance – hold your breath – take your time – lose your mind – free your soul – head up high – out of hand – break fresh ground – waste your youth – on the road – in your face – down to earth – not a crime – make some sense

Kay Alexander Plonka:
Keep on being off the wall!

Marcus Ludwig:
40 years ago Paul, entirely off the wall and self-conscious, offered his own footwear. A totally new shoe and an entirely independent product meeting the demands of surfers back in the days, and like crazy, off the wall, they developed into an institution, as skaters used them to drive in bowls, on the street, everywhere. In a skate context, off the wall means from the ground up, poppin’ high, pop off the wall...like, for example, with a wallride or in vert skating. Off the wall stands for revolution, a punk attitude; even Sean Penn didn’t look normal in his checkered Slip-Ons in Richmond!

[Verse 4]
(Yeah, yeah, lets go...)
In my vans shoes, but they look like sneakers
Yea, they old skool, like high-top Adidas
Now we getting’ money, all these niggas wanna be us
But I don't give a fukk cuz my whole team see us
These niggas wouldn't bust a nut in a porno flick
Black on black, so they won't get dirty
Lookin’ like a grown man, feelin’ like I'm 'bout 30
Super official, short blow the whistle
Talk to my pistol if u got an issue
Smokin' purple stuff, got my eyes all hazy
Play dat Young Stunna, dope girls go crazy
My vans go stupid, skitz-oh-manie
Better cuff ya chick, slip-ons get ladies
U can have them coke whites wit them dirty ass laces
Nigga, vans GO, all u lame niggas face it
But my vans lime green, yea, I'm flyer than a space ship.

Romy Uebel:
Off the wall is the new normal.

Oliver, the pixelz:
I still remember my first pair of Vans shoes I had ordered from
the US twenty-one years ago. That day you could do everything
yourself, customize your own shoes: determine the
colours of the rubber stripes & motifs of the solesides, colours,
patterns & materials, you could even choose a different design
for both sides of each shoe – completely individual and unique.
I also remember the "shoegoo" which we used to fix our
shoes after every skate session in order to make them last
another month... memories of a really def time!

Niklas Zingler:
Holidays, palm trees, waves, a surfboard and an ice box full of beer in Costa Rica, huuuuuh, that’s off the wall!

Roland Bieber:
Off the wall means to me to drive hundreds of miles to a shop, camp there for over 24 hours just to get hold of a pair of rare kicks.

Florian Biedermann:
For me "Off The Wall" is intrinsically tied to the beginning of a new musical era. 'Off The Wall' was the title of Michael Jackson’s first solo album in 1979, at a time when his skin was still black and his music honest and cutting-edge. In my opinion, this album is the missing link between the 70s Disco music and the real early 80s rap and hip hop movement. This album was the base for an entire new type of music, and although it was a huge success (20 million albums sold), it was really 'Off The Wall'.

Jiri Katter:
I got my BMX-bike and my first pair of vans 21 years ago. I still ride both of them.

Artoo:
Well, maybe for some people skateboarding will always be hardcore and with that goes the hardcore music. To be honest: it never did for me. Skateboarding always was something that had to be good looking and had to have some flow, same for me with music. And boy, was I relieved when in blind "video days" Michael Jackson played my favourite tune ever "I WANT YOU BACK." This will be always my number one song, I can’t imagine another tune that lifts me up like it does. And although I’m not Michael’s biggest fan, he is one of the best music brains we have, maybe he lost his way after ’85, but that’s another story. In '79 he came up with his album "Off the Wall" and proved who he really is and who he can be with the help of Quincy Jones. A friggin’ superstar that won’t stop until he’s got enough. A transformation took place from boy to man (he never stopped transforming, and my best guess is he will be the first alien on earth soon) and this is what he was doing: He took things off the wall and took 'em into the street. My reference to Vans is a similar one, when I was about to grow up I had to take a stand because I wore red white checkered shoes to school, I got laughed at, bullied and whatnot but what I did was taking my shoes off the wall and into the street, taking a stand showing who I am. And this is what off the wall is for me, getting your stuff out there showing who you are, off the wall into the street.

Clarence Kwan:
Off the wall: Grafitti, Michael Jackson, and Steve van Doren.

Martin van Doren:
(speaking with the words of the Beastie Boys)
"Body Movin"
Ready, one
You will do this four times with the left
Four with the right
Then eight times with both
Then repeat
Body movin’, body movin’
A-1 sound, sound so sooth
We be getting down and you know we're crush groovin’
Now let me get some action from the back section
We need body rocking not perfection
Let your back bone flip but don’t slip a disc
Let your spine unwind just take a risk
I wanna do the freak until the break of dawn
Now, tell me party people is that so wrong
The ship is docking, inter-lockin’
And up-rockin’ electro-shockin’
We're getting down computer action
Do the robotic satisfaction
All of y'all get off the wall
Have a ball and get involved with
Body movin’, body movin’
with the A-1 sound so soothing
Body movin’, body movin’
We be gettin’ down and you know we're crush groovin’.
