HIGHMATH and the American art scene of tomorrow

In May the LA-based art magazine ARKITIP and Danish gallery V1 Gallery invited 48 groundbreaking American artists, young and old, to contribute to an exhibition showcasing the essence of the American
art scene right now.
During the four years V1 Gallery has existed, the gallery has consistently refused to compromise with artistic quality and public fads. This stern attitude towards curating has secured V1 Gallery a status as one of the most appreciated galleries in Denmark – not only by visitors but also by artists.
V1’s huge interest in various forms of art is constantly reflected on the walls of the gallery. One day street art by OBEY, Faile or Banksy cover the white walls, others the visitors are challenged with abstract painting or art videos. The only red thread characterizing V1 Gallery is enthusiasm and a consistent notion of quality and rebellion against fixed ways of thinking.

The DIY-spirit of ARKITIP and V1’s open and critical attitude toward art proved to be a perfect match. The combination of V1’s intimate and simple settings and ARKITIP’s artistic horn of plenty created an exhibition that will long be remembered by the lucky people who were able to experience it.
The exhibition, called Highmath (a title that refers to the intricate relationships existing between artists), was the essence of America’s art scene of today and tomorrow in the form of litographs, silk screen prints, photographs and hand-sketched originals. Behind the works were names such as shooting star Chris Linding, wunderkind Chuck Anderson, veteran C.R. Stecyk III, New York street artist Dalek, renowned Kaws, legendary skater Ed Templeton, prolific graphic designer Geoff McFetridge and many more. Old friends of V1 Gallery such as Shepard Fairey, Richard Coleman and Jo Jackson also contributed to the extensive exhibition. On the opening night it was proved that there is great interest in the young alternative contemporary American art scene. More than 500 people from all over the world showed up between 5pm and 22pm. Most of them facing the fact that the work they intended on buying had already been sold. At the afterparty Damon Way, the vice president of DC Shoes, and local DJ crew We Got Beef spun rock and electro till dawn.

FYI: The title Highmath refers to the intricate relationships between the artist represented in the exhibition.
