THE
ARTIST PROJECT DC shoes vs. Methamphibian
Founded by Ken Block and Damon Way in
1993 DCshoes grew to a prominent brand inside action sports.
Since 2001 the Artist Projects series has given renowned artists
a good opportunity to express themselves throughout the creation
of a special DC shoe edition. In the past, Kaws, Obey, Frost,
SSur, Howell and others worked out their own style stamped on
DCs footwear which made a big impact to the whole industry.
Next up is Methamphibian, short Meth known for his custom style
on footwear, some people even say it is hard to find a better
one. From a personal hobby, Meth has grown to become one of the
top names in customized sneakers and colorways; pioneering techniques
in sewing, hand painting and setting the standard for the way
custom shoes are made today. Now he teamed up with DC to create
his artist shoe coming along with an M65 jacket.
As Pieter/ Methamphibian says
in the feature on dcshoes.com:
The basic premise or 2inspiration of the shoe is based
on Southern California mid-80s Skate and Punk culture.
It was then I really started to take notice of graphics and art
when I was young growing up in San Diego. I wanted to pay homage
to that era by bringing back something of that essence, out of
respect. A great thing about this particular shoe, similar to
many classics of the 80s era is the more you wear them the better
they look, no matter how trashed or beaten they are. This is
a shoe that is meant to be thrashed to death and not looked at
in a box. For the jacket, I wanted to design something militaristic
and simple with heavy contrast that fits into my aesthetic. It
is important to me that everything flows coherently with each
other, rather then slapping a bunch of current flavors together
and making something just for the sake of making it.
To launch these styles in a
perfect way three events will take place, where you will get
a limited run of hand painted shoes, limited screen prints of
the meth artworks and the chance to be the first wearing those
unique styles. The general European release starts April 5th
in Barcelona as the tour completes in London. [mm]
