DAVE KINSEY | UNLEARN and RETHINK [
german version ]
Dave
Kinsey uses the streets to spread his message UNLEARN and RETHINK,
closely linked to his character-driven art. On the one hand he
is always a step ahead of the police; on the other hand, his
work can be admired in galleries all over the world. Apart from
the fact that he is a professional designer responsible for the
development of logos and advertising campaigns of well-known
brands, Kinsey has also been one of the most significant innovators
of streetart.
How did it all begin?
When I moved to Atlanta
to go to art school, I started doing a lot of street art and
developing a fine art style. From there, I moved to painting
and then applying my ideas to clothing and skateboard graphics.
I actually wanted to be an architect but didn't have the discipline
to do the math.
How would you define streetart in your way?
Self-expression through the experience of environment and
life journey. I do street installations by wheat-pasting my characters
up in obscure spots. I gravitated towards this because it gave
me an opportunity to have a more assertive and accurate presentation
of my work.
How do you see the changes in streetart over the past year?
Borders being blurred
in application & medium. Streetart over time has mostly been
graffiti with spray cans. Now you see actual street paintings
done with a brush, wheat-pasted images, stencil art and even
sculptures welded to the streets.
What changed in your art?
In 1996, I transitioned the body of my work from spray cans
to wheat-paste on the street art end of what I do. Since 94,
my style has become more refined and developed. I try to constantly
challenge my messages and better communicate my ideas through
various mediums and design projects. With my clothing line Kinseyvisual
I am currently finding myself grasping another application to
express my ideas beyond just the streets or a canvas.
