PUNK'S NOT DEAD!
Punk is no religious cult, Punk means thinking for yourself and do it yourself, also known as DIY, Punk is old school and in every school. In the late 1960s, rock bands such as The Stooges and MC5 began to play a stripped-down, louder and more aggressive form of rock 'n' roll sometimes called pre-punk as a response to the commercialization of the hippie culture. In the U.S., a lot of bands started to frequent New York City's CBGB's founded by Hilly Kristal in 1973, which became the platform to perform in the early punk scene. The full name is CBGB & OMFUG which stands for "Country Blue Grass Blues and Other Music for Uplifting Gormandizers". So, for people who gobble music Punk is, of course, a musical and subcultural tradition established around 1976 by bands like the Ramones or the Dead Boys in New York and the Sex Pistols and the Clash in London. But Shakespeare mentioned it first, don't know why! The Clash had intelligent lyrics, the Sex Pistols had cleverly sarcastic ones, Buzzcocks had catchy tunes, and the Exploited came along and preached anarchy. Later, in the 1980s, Jodie Foster had her own army and others had stiff little fingers or Suicidal Tendencies, the other half cab played bass to songs like skate and destroy and the Stern Brothers formed a youth brigade and the Better Youth Organization. There were punks drinking a lot and some did not drink, did not smoke and did not fuck around in the neighbourhood; this was invented by Ian MacKaye in his Minor Threat song "Straight Edge". Those had bald heads, others had long hair, and attention catchers had green spiked hair: different inspiration, different meanings, different intention, with different attention, different attitudes but Punk is still evolving, however, into a number of different forms and for some, into a much broader category: a lifestyle, an ethic, a worldview. You aren't hardcore because you spike your hair. Martin Magielka
